Hello world!
I realize that I have been a fail blogger for the past...um....four months, I believe it is. That's sad. So I'm going to try to get back into this, assuming it doesn't end up as yet another distraction.
Today's topic is fanfiction. I've gotten into writing it more recently, and it's fun. I see it as good writing practice, because writing is like anything else. More experience makes you better. Practice makes perfect. And fanfiction is easier than anything else - your world, your characters, your everything is all set up for you. All you need to do is tweak it a little bit.
So you have your idea. Then you get to writing it. Sometimes the characters take on unique characteristics that are totally out of character (OOC) for the fandom you're writing for. Sometimes things happen that could never happen in the book/movie/TV show/whatever. But that's why it's called fanFICTION. It's fictitious. And it's fun that way!
Now you're done writing it. You want to share it, so you post it somewhere like fanfiction.net or show it to your friends. In my case, it's both, but I'd like to talk about sharing online.
Online, you get reviews. That means you've got readers. People are reading your work, and sometimes they even like it and want to let you know. You get that first review, and you're stoked. You're dancing around, shouting about how wonderful you are and how you're going to be famous - or maybe this is all happening only in your head, and on the surface, you're just smiling. This, right here, is the glory of fanfiction.
But then you get that first flame. That's the pitfall of fanfiction. That's what happened to me today. I got - not one, but two - flame reviews.
This was me:
:D "Yay! Review!"
:) *reads review*
: "That wasn't very nice."
>:[ "That *****!"
Now I'm getting into my own personal experience.
I had an idea for writing for a fandom I can't even say I'm part of. I was writing for "Castle" even though I don't watch the show (well, I'm going to!). Strange, yes, but I'd gotten the idea, and there was no stopping me writing it. So I did. It took me maybe three days to finish the thing. Then I posted it on fanfiction.net just last night.
Today, I checked my email. Fanfiction.net sends me emails when I get put on alert, favorited, or reviews. So I started reading the reviews I'd gotten. There were four. Two of them were flames, even though at least one (possibly both) said they "don't mean to be flaming."
SURE YA DON'T.
I had warned in the disclaimer before the story that I don't watch the show. I had warned that it would be OOC. But what did they flame me for?
FOR BEING OOC.
Okay. Here's what I have to say: if you don't want to see it, don't look. If you don't want to hear it, don't listen. And if you don't want to read it, don't read!
(Of course this isn't applicable all the time. We can't just close our eyes to the world and not see what's going on in the world; we need to be aware. But I think you can get what I'm saying.)
*sigh* Thanks for letting me rant. I'm impressed if you got all the way here, and even more impressed if you have not changed your view of me (probably for the worse) along the way. I have decided that I will express my opinions, and you can think whatever you want.
Until next time!
~ Dani
P.S. It would make me happy if you'd like to check out my fanfiction. If you're awesome enough to do so, look here!
